move on avenue 3

MIAMI, florida

Avenue 3 - a uniquely short, historic street in the heart of Downtown Miami - is perfect for pedestrian activity with 10+ restaurants on site, yet lacks identity and appeal. There’s intense heat during the day, specially during summer months, excessive asphalt, lack of appropriate lighting at night and on-going construction, all of which contribute to a feeling of unsafety, affecting residents and local business. Views across the street are obstructed by parked vehicles on both sides of the one-way street, making outdoor dining and evening strolls even less attractive.

Move on Avenue 3 goals: (1) to resolve the primary concern for residents and business owners which is lack of appropriate lighting at night, (2) to provide shade and create a memorable image for the street, (3) to promote a pedestrian environment by expanding the public space into the parking lanes for outdoor dining and promote alternative modes of transportation.

(1) Lighting: The proposed energy efficient, dark-sky approved catenary lighting system is attached from building façade to building façade and does not obstruct the sidewalk.

(2) Shade: From the cable system suspending the lights also hang vertical fabric strips that provide color, shade and movement without adding significant uplift.

(3) Mobility: Miami’s Central Business District is car-dominated but Avenue 3 has the potential to become downtown’s pedestrian and non-motorized haven. On-street parking lanes are turned into public space through asphalt art, with a few spots remaining for pick-up and drop-off as well as a designated spot for Downtown’s free electric vehicle service, FreeBee.
